Berlin, October 2004, three young people pay a visit to a good friend. Although all three have already been to the capital at least once, we do a little bit of sightseeing. The weather is fine and we're all in a brilliant mood. "Let's try to get on top of the Siegessäule!" I've always wanted to do that. Even my grandma was once on top of this monument and had left a message there (probably covered under ten layers of paint now). "No, you can't get up there!" argues Matthi, but he's wrong.

Berlin, October 2004, three young people pay a visit to a good friend. Although all three have already been to the capital at least once, we do a little bit of sightseeing. The weather is fine and we’re all in a brilliant mood. “Let’s try to get on top of the Siegessäule!” I’ve always wanted to do that. Even my grandma was once on top of this monument and had left a message there (probably covered under ten layers of paint now). “No, you can’t get up there!” argues Matthi, but he’s wrong.

Although the Siegessäule is on a traffic island there is an under-crossing for pedestrians that let’s you reach the monument without being run over by a car. The entrance fee isn’t that high but the way up to the top (50,66 metres) is long. You have to climb 285 steps. Once on the viewing platform you have a marvellous view over the city, to the west, the east, the north and the south. There is not much room on the viewing platform so when it is crowded it is hard to push your way through.

The monument was erected in 1873 after the victories over Denmark in 1864 and France in 1870/71. On top of the pillar stands Victoria (also known as Borrusia because of her winged helmet) but she is only called “Goldelse” in Berlin.

To get to the Siegessäule you best take the bus No#100. This bus drives past all interesting places and sightseeing points. Leave at “Schöoss Bellevue” or “Großer Stern”. You can also take S3, S5 or S7 to “Bellevue”.
The Siegessäule is open from
