Cossack village The monastery came under Starocherkasskaya village in the late 16th century, it was the capital of the Don Cossacks from 1620 to 1637 years. and the main base of the Azov campaign. Here buried Cossacks killed in "Azov seats". The monastic town was destroyed by the Turks in 1644. In 1696, by order of Peter 1 in the Monastery of the town-strengthening tranzhement was built, which existed before the advent of Anna's fortress. The ruins of the town and the mass grave have since become one of the main holy places of Don Cossack. In 1867 a mass grave was erected the chapel of the Holy Virgin "in honor and eternal glory of the Don Cossacks, explorers and krepkoderzhateley Azov". In Soviet times the chapel was destroyed in 2005, rebuilt on the ancient foundations as close as possible to the original.
Not far from the Cossack mass grave is the burial place of the Red Army 12th Infantry Division of the First Cavalry Army, killed in early January 1920 in the village of Starocherkasskaya. Also buried here were killed White Cossacks. Near to the common grave of 11 sailors-sailors of the gunboat "Rostov don" who died in 1941 during the siege of Taganrog.
May 9, 1974 Memorial of Military Glory was opened in Kaplice and on high stele on the banks of the Don knocked three dates: 1641, 1920, 1941.
