1—A sacred space

In bed holding my NewSpring Bible. It was an incredibly meaningful gift for my birthday in August. In a way it symbolizes a starting over. A realization that I’m more interested in the truth of the Bible and what God says and thinks than pleasing church culture. I’ve always had this in me but more recently I’ve really realized how damaging church culture can be for me and I don’t want to be a part of that. I still love and trust God, am still His child. But due to the effects of church culture it’s extremely hard for me to read the Bible—having it so often taken out of context and sometimes used against me. And I find this painfully sad and frustrating. My husband surprised me by ordering this Bible from NewSpring store, from the only church I’m able to listen to right now (the church we attended when we lived near it). Because the leadership and church body are led by and focused on God, there is such a healthy balance of grace and truth that is so refreshing and life-giving. I am still struggling but have not given up. Even though it’s very challenging I still open this Bible each morning before getting out of bed and read a Psalm from it. It’s not much but it’s my practice of sticking with it, showing God I have not turned away from Him, listening and hopefully growing. www.newspring.org/

Nice! I read the ESV. I also like what you had to say about your church... I visited their site and checked out their statement of faith, very close to what I believe. Glad you have that in your life.

@nonspecificscientific that’s awesome that you read the ESV! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment—I really appreciate it. I’m very thankful for my connection to this church. Unfortunately we live 8 hours away and are very thankful to connect through livestream each weekend (and they even share YouTube videos of all the children’s services too). If you’re ever interested you can check out past messages on the church website or livestream on the weekends (of course no pressure though).

@acreamer Always good to encounter a fellow saint online. I think that's great that you feel so connected with that body, sucks that it's that far away, though. Do you guys have a solid, local body with whom you can fellowship? I find that to be needful in times like these...

@nonspecificscientific thank you, it’s good to connect online. It’s a bit of a complicated backstory and unfortunately right now we don’t have a safe, healthy local church to attend. I agree that it is so important to have a local body. During this time participating online with a trusted, familiar church is the healthiest choice for our family and we hope and pray for a local church community at some point.

@acreamer I hear you. I’ll pray you find a healthy local body soon.
