It looks more like a graphic novel by Frank Miller than film photography but it's film. Microfilm to be specific. Shot at EI 6 only and processed in Kodak D-76 rather than in its normal developer, which explains the crushing contrast and total absence of nuance. Apparently, with the dedicated Nanospeed developer, you get a higher usable speed (up to 50 ISO) and a tonal gradation that's not a binary black/white.
