Piskarev Cemetery, St. Petersburg, July 19, 2017.

Buried here in mass graves are 500,000 of up to 1,500,000 who died in the siege of Leningrad, 1941-1943. Each relatively small section marked by a stone marker contains 20,000 bodies. Markers with a hammer and sickle designate civilians, while those with a star designate soldiers. Visitors often leave a slice of bread to recall the extreme famine and starvation caused by the blockade.
