Daily life along a canal in Burano, Venice

Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, known for its hand-crafted lace, as well as its typical brightly colored houses, although the reason and origin of this custom is not yet clear. One hypothesis suggests that each color is simply the symbol of a particular family, as even in modern times there are few but very common surnames. For this reason in Burano, as elsewhere in the Veneto, you use nicknames added to surname for distinguishing one branch of the family for the other. Another assumption says that bright colors serve the boatmen to find their home in the presence of fog, which Burano is particularly dense.
