• Alt-Staaken, The Church at the Berlin Border

  Staaken was first mentioned in a document on 26 March 1273. The Pastor Johannes Theile (1892–1964), who served as pastor in Staaken from 1927 to 1958, came into conflict with National Socialism on several occasions because he openly supported those persecuted by the Nazi regime. From 1943 until the end of the war, Johannes Theile – like his Catholic colleague, Pastor Georg Jurytko from Gatow – accompanied numerous soldiers on their way to execution and cared for their bereaved families. He was initially buried in the In den Kisseln cemetery and reburied in the Alt-Staaken cemetery in 2002. In 1951, Staaken was divided as part of a territorial exchange. The western part became part of the Nauen district of the GDR in exchange for territory needed by the British for the expansion of Gatow Airfield. Staaken was now divided by a border, and the village church was located in the territory administered by the GDR. It was inaccessible to residents of West Berlin, but it continued to serve as a parish church for the residents of West Staaken. Since the opening of the inner-German border in November 1989, the church has been open to all visitors again.
