The HM-69 Nike Missile Base was completed after the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 and remained in operation until 1979. The base is located southwest of Miami in the Everglades National Park. HM-69 Nike Missile Base was built to protect against a potential air attack from the south. The missiles were designed to shoot down enemy bombers. Some of the missiles were armed with nuclear weapons. The site today is well preserved and remains largely intact from when the base last remained operational in 1979.
