Remembering Fellow Lomographer lakandula

For anyone who has known, met, and worked with communtiy member lakandula, today truly is a sad day. Friends have confirmed that he passed away in his 30s from Stage 4 brain cancer.

However, knowing my bubbly fellow lomographer from the Philippines, Lakan, as we all fondly call him, wouldn’t want us to dwell too much in sadness over his passing. After all, friends said he didn’t want people to worry too much about him so he preferred not to let his illness be known to most people. Even so, now is the time for us, his fellow lomographers from all over the world, to remember him and his impressive feats in lomography, and show appreciation for his works.

Let me begin: I first met him way back in 2010 during a photowalk for Whilst We Wait, a Philippine-based photography project organized by basterda. He was friendly, outspoken, and clearly passionate about shooting with film. I eventually saw him as a multi-faceted person: a leader, a dedicated artist, a visionary, and a caring friend. Later, I saw how he was a prolific and experimental lomographer in every sense, and his close to 42,000 photos and 3,154 albums — varying from self-portraits, double/multiple exposures, to travel snaps — can definitely attest to that.

Inevitably, he also became every Filipino lomographer’s role model when it comes to living life the analogue way. His accomplishments in the Lomography community — such as winning the competitions that sent him to Brazil and Seoul — have been the inspiration and pride of his fellow Filipino film shooters.
