Musings from Self-isolation: Eduardo Espinoza

1

Everyone has a way of dealing with the extra time that self-isolation brings. In this series, we try to see how creatives from all over the world are using all that time to work on their photo portfolio. In this episode, we take a look at the work of photographer Eduardo Espinoza that embraces the analogue lifestyle.

What do you do and what got you started with photography?

Thank you, it is an honor for me to have you consider my work. My name is Eduardo Espinoza and I am from Mexico and I like experimental analogue photography, gifs, analog 3D gifs. Working as a film projector using 35mm film in a cinema was what made me fall in love with the format, and somehow watching many films helped me to "polish" my vision. Years later, I got my first camera and started creating images.

How are you holding up during the quarantine?

At first, it was hard for me to adapt to the idea of not seeing the people I frequently saw, to break the routine, and above all, to slow down in terms of photos. But then thanks to technology, I was able to be closer to my girlfriend in some way or another, to continue creating photos as much as possible, either in self-portraits or in the necessary outings like when I go to the supermarket or for business or any work that has to go outside. This has helped me to find myself again and from there to stay positive.

Any photo series in the works? What's the story behind it?

I am currently practicing the technique of exposing on both sides of the film. The last series was of two rolls that I made with my girlfriend (LomoHome: @moda_daniela). We had good results, but we can still improve and decide if we do something at random or have a predetermined shoot and take care of the technical aspects to continue improving.

What subject do you miss photographing?

I miss making portraits. It is something I do often and I need a little human interaction. That often nurtures the creative process of photos, exchanging ideas, improvising with places and objects from outside, etc.

What is the first thing you would like to do once things get back to normal?

Without a doubt being close to loved ones, going to the cinema or some park - places I usually frequent. Also, things like giving my thoughts a little relief and above all, taking many photos with the peace of mind that if I go out, my health and that of my relatives will be OK.
