Musings from Self-isolation: Marcin Woliński (NSFW)

Everyone has a way of dealing with the extra time that self-isolation brings. In this series, we try to see how creatives from all over the world are using all that time to work on their photo portfolio. In this episode, we take a look at the work of photographer Marcin Woliński that highlights the beauty of the feminine form through sensual portraits.

What do you do and what got you started with photography?

My work is completely not related to photography and throughout the years, I have discovered that it actually works best for me. I don’t like associating photography with money. It gives me much more freedom in creating what I really love. I’m not sure when it all started. There was a time in my life when I used to work supporting movies in post-production and although I wasn’t a big fan, I’ve turned out to be pretty good at it. This definitely got me into the world of editing videos and then pictures. My uncle, who's a wedding photographer, often liked to use my skills when he was behind with his work. He also got me my first digital camera thinking that maybe I will join his business and this is how I fell in love with photography. Except I was always focused on the bride and the fact that she actually doesn’t need a dress.

I have started photographing women in 2008. Starting from friends (still dressed), inexperienced models (also still dressed) and I’ve slowly discovered what I really like - capturing beautiful women in a natural light wearing nothing except pure delicacy. In 2014, I got my first analogue camera because there was always something magic about film and I just wanted to give it a go. Loved it ever since.

How are you holding up during quarantine?

I am a key worker, so life has not changed that much for me. It is a hard time for everyone though. I definitely miss people. Miss my family, friends, I miss meeting new faces but I try to use this time wisely. I constantly want to improve my skills. I watch a lot of YouTube tutorials, experiment with editing, develop and scan old films and look for some inspirations to be ready when the quarantine is finally over.

I am slowly starting to work on my first album. It is something that I have always wanted to do. I’m planning to combine my two favorite photography subjects - beautiful natural women and landscapes. It’s definitely gonna be something delicate and I would love to shoot it all just on film.

What subject do you miss photographing?

I’m sure nobody’s gonna be surprised by my answer - I miss women. Currently, the only available woman is my wife but this lockdown lasts too long to survive with just one model. I also miss photographing landscapes. Thankfully, all the restrictions are slowly easing and we are finally allowed to spend some time in the outdoors more, so I always take my camera for longer walks.

What is the first thing you would like to do once things get back to normal?

I think I will take my wife out for a date. We’ll get some Italian food, go to the cinema and we will surely enjoy and appreciate it more than ever before. This quarantine definitely taught everyone to not take anything for granted.
