Hi, Cyril! What do you do and what got you started with photography?

I'm a political science student at SciencesPo Paris, currently finishing my Master's degree. I got into photography when I was 16, as soon as I inherited both my Leica and my Konica from my grandparents. To me, these two cameras are invaluable, because they far exceed their market value thanks to the emotional attachment I have to both of them.

How did you discover Lomography and what made you join our analogue Community? Who are your favorite photographers here?

I used to go to the Lomography shop very often in Paris, so after it closed, I was very sad. Fortunately, I recently discovered the online community I instantly got into it! My favorite Lomohomes are @7samurai and @alloftheabove, because they manage to maintain a theme throughout their pictures, which is something I've been trying to get into lately.

What is your favorite subject to photograph? What do you usually look for in a scene before you hit the shutter?

My favorite subjects are those that we least expect to photograph, empty landscapes, and still lifes (yes, the plural of still life is still lifes!). I follow the great principle of always carrying my camera around and shooting when I feel like it, following my guts.

In this day and age, why choose film?

I got into film by accident and stayed with film by purpose. It's a rather expensive hobby, but you get to pick wisely what you shoot, and thus keep a limited amount of strong memories, instead of your iPhone's camera roll which has an infinite amount of diluted memories.

What does a perfect day look like for you?

A trip abroad, with friends or family, and beautiful landscapes. No more, no less.

Hi, Bill! What do you do and what got you started with photography?

I’m a marine biologist who now works as a secondary school biology teacher. I’ve always been into cameras. My Dad gave me a Konica Pop when I was 10 and I saved up to buy an SLR (a Ricoh KR-10) when I was 12 – that was in 1982! Dad also gave me a Nikonos when I started my Ph.D. and I did a lot of underwater stuff with that, for work and for fun.

How did you discover Lomography and what made you join our analogue Community? Who are your favorite photographers here?

I had some heart problems at the start of 2019 and was off work for a while - photography helped me fill the time and it was good therapy so I took a lot of pictures and tried some different photo-sharing sites. I like Lomography because it’s so international and because it’s friendly and non-judgemental – that’s really unusual on social media. There are also lots of crazy people with great ideas and a willingness to experiment and I've learned a lot from them.

It’s tough to narrow it down! I like @vicuna’s Xpan panoramas, @marcoyeti56’s Italian landscapes, @oleman’s black and whites, and @lalouve’s crazy doubles.

What makes you stay with film photography in this day and age? What's your favorite subject to shoot?

So many reasons! I use digital for macro shots of insects and especially underwater, where the image is all about the detail of the subject. Film is better at capturing the feel and emotion of a scene. Film is slower to shoot so it forces you to think and to time your shot perfectly – I don’t think Cartier-Bresson would have written about the ‘decisive moment’ if he could reel off 12 FPS with a digital SLR and pick the one he liked. Developing a film is always a surprise, like opening windows on an Advent calendar. Finally, I just love film cameras.

I’m really intrigued by abandoned things that are falling apart – buildings, cars, boats, etc. – they all have a story to tell, and I love the ocean and anything living. I enjoy street photography and would like to do more but it hasn’t been a good year for that…

For you, what's the best part about being a Lomographer?

Forgetting about everything else for a while and living in the moment.

What is your favorite Lomography camera and film and why?

I’ve had a lot of fun with my old Russian LC-A. Filmwise, LomoChrome Purple because I think it’s the most unique but please make more of the turquoise!
