Glamorous Experimentations — Fashion photos by Anaël Boulay taken with the LomoGraflok

Passionate about large format photography since eight years, Anaël Boulay immediately adopted the LomoGraflok 4×5 Instant Back which allows to use Instax Wide films with large format cameras. It's a readymade solution for Anaël who had previously been doing DIY and modifications to be able to use the Instax Wide films with his camera.

Since then, Anaël has integrated the LomoGraflok into his fashion photography practice and uses it to bring his glamorous and experimental universe to life. Meet the artist through this article.

Hello Anaël, could you introduce yourself to our readers?

I have been a photographer for ten years, I started with travel reportages and street photography, then it was portraiture and art direction for fashion that ended up seducing me. Everything is allowed there, I can fully experiment everything that comes to my mind.

What are your sources of inspiration for your shootings?

In general, it starts with an idea and then research work. I am inspired by Italian painting, surrealism, impressionism… And masters of photography like Sarah Moon, Helmut Newton, Paolo Roversi and Guy Bourdin…

You leave room for experimentation in your fashion photos, why this choice?

I like experimentation, it allows you to discover new horizons. Taking risks is really interesting in photography, especially in film.

How long have you been practising large format photography? What do you like the most about it?

I have been practising large format photography for eight years with different cameras, 9×12, 4×5 or 18×24. We take our time and compose the image like a painter in front of its artwork, which can give strength to the image.

Tell us about your experience with the LomoGraflok. What large format did you use it with? What did you like the most?

I work with a Graflex Crown Graphic from 1950 coupled with Linhof optics. I was extremely impatient to receive the LomoGraflok because before its creation I disassembled the Instax boxes to load my 4x5 film holder in the dark and it was a very long process. Also, it was quite demanding technically to develop the films after the shoot. I had even converted a Polaroid 250 to work with a Lomo'Instant Wide! So the day the LomoGraflok was released, I was really, really happy with its ease of use.

How did you integrate this new tool into your photographic practice?

It's quite simply the logical continuation of my modifications with a solid and practical product, a real answer to a need. It allows us to use large format camera lenses with Instax films, a real treat.

Any projects you would like to tell us about?

Yes, I'm currently showing my photos taken with the LomoGraflok at the Galerie de la Clé in Paris as part of the Expolaroid festival. This exhibition is visible until April 23rd and also includes photos by Romain Battaglia and Mélina Zauber.
