Making a Moment: Amp Puttipong Shares a Secret Behind This Double Exposure

In our article series, Making a Moment, we’re asking photographers to share one of their favorite photos that they’ve taken. We want to know the story behind the final image and everything that went into making it.

This time we’re talking to Thai Photographer Amp Puttipong (@amp_puttipong), who, when he’s not busy running his print design business, always enjoys flexing his creativity with experimental film photography. Amp is an active member of the Lomography community and earlier this year took part in our 10 Golden Rules Challenge with his fun fisheye captures.

Now he’s back to share one of his favorite photos, a double exposure taken on a day he's not likely to forget.

Amp Puttipong: Behind this picture is a secret. I almost didn't survive before this photo was taken.

Me and my four friends were planning to go on a trip together. My friend volunteered to drive his Beetle to take us on a trip. I was sitting in the very back of the car. Along the way my friend was surprised. His car couldn't accelerate. We started to feel the heat and smell burning. My friend sitting next to me saw the engine fire behind me. We were shocked and hurriedly drove to the side of the road. In the meantime, the fire was growing heavier.

We parked and everyone escaped. I was in the back and tried to push everything out as quickly as possible. At that moment everything I saw was slow. I was terrified, but I finally managed to escape from this car. I hurried to find water to help put out the fire that was flashing in the engine behind the car.

This picture was taken while we were waiting for a rescue vehicle. I used my Nikon FM2n with a Nikkor 50 f1.4 lens and Kodak Color Plus 200.

It was a coincidence that our Beetle was parked right next to the flower market. I just walked around taking pictures to waste the time because we had to wait so long. I had just got this camera so I want to try the double exposure function. I took a picture of the front of this car that still looked perfect, beautiful, but the back was completely burned out.

It came out more beautiful than expected. I love the overlapping of the flowers and the car. It was as if it really was the pattern of this car.
