Tipster of the Week: Reversed X-pro
30 47 Share TweetJust when you thought you already did everything there is to do with film, you had it wrong then. Because out of excitement from the previous Film Orgy that had happened, Stouf thought of another way to play with them, yet again! And you know how we love these kinds of things here at Tipster, so treat yourselves and read on!
C41 – B&W – E6 – Xpro by stouf
Following eggzakly’s recommendations about E6 X-pro, and after discovering that some B&W films can be cross-processed, during a film orgy with rater and androfun here’s the method to get B&W slides.
As eggzakly taught us, negative (C41) films can be cross-processed by processing them in E6 chemistry. So we’re talking about the other way of X-pro, not the usual one (where slide film is processed in C41 chemistry). To do so, the E6 process must be pushed by 3 stops (a 10 minutes longer exposure to first developer, compared to the duration given here). You’ll get a nice slide, not really Black and White, but anyway… It’s enough to pretend that you’re close to the mythical Agfa Scala.
So, logically, you’ll need B&W films that can be processed in C41 chemistry. The ones I know are (if anyone knows any other, please tell us in the comments):
- Kodak BW400CN
- KodakT400CN
- Kodak Portra 400BW
- Fuji Neopan 400CN
- Ilford XP2
I’ve tested both Kodak BW400CN and Ilford XP2, and also a 70mm Holga with Kodak BW400CN + an unknown color negative 400 iso.
Instead of Black and White, the Ilford came out with hues of blue and pink while Kodak had a green and orange tint. I recommend using a red filter to increase contrasts, as with any B&W film, and to slightly under-expose the Ilford XP2 to get a better density.
