Name: Norlizah
LomoHome: stonerfairy
Location: Singapore
Number of years as a Lomographer: 9 years
Number of years in the Community: 6 years
Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your main interests?
I’m a happy-go-lucky girl. I love to chat and tell jokes. I work as a graphic designer in a landscape architectural design firm. My main interests are music and photography. Also, I love traveling and mostly it’s because of music and photography!
Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name. Why did you decide to have that username?
I love fairytale stories and I’m not a morning person. My colleagues call me “stoner” every morning. Also, one of my great friends labeled me as “Stonerfairy” on his mobile phone. I stumbled upon it and fell in love with the nickname since!
Share with us your most memorable experience in the Community.
I have countless of memorable experiences with the Singapore Lomo community. One of outdoor photoshoots that I can’t forget until today is the chalk painting outing.
We drew our own designs on the ground using chalk. Then, the models lay and posed on the ground to match what we’ve just drawn! It’s interesting! It’s a new experience and experiment. We have to shoot from the top just to get the right angles. Here are some photos from that event:
Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.
Yes! I met a lot from different countries but I can’t say we’re close friends. We share the same interests so there’s a lot to talk about. It always feel like we’ve known each other for a very long time. The best part of all is that I got along well with every lomographer I met. These are the lomographers which I’m very close with, so far:
Singapore: quaisoir, lawypop, renaishinshin, ngmail, iantheman, coolsigg, hakimbo05, kaelcat, azzzy, and niko_fuzzy
Malaysia: eastmoe, ripsta, eva_eva, ahleng90, and johann_affendy
Indonesia: adi_totp, panjihardjakaprabon, and mgf
I have a fantastic story to share about these guys from Bandung, Indonesia! I really love them from the bottom my heart! I went to Bandung with quaisoir and they really treated us well!
We learned a lot about the lomo scene and street photography from adi_totp and panjihardjakaprabon. We chatted nonstop as we walk and shoot along the streets. We walked more than 20 kilometers but I didn’t noticed it because we kept on laughing and laughing. They are the friendly and informative lomo gang of their town. In fact, we got to know more lomo friends because of Adi. He introduced us to about about seven or eight more but I can’t remember their LomoHomes. We still keep in touch through Facebook and Instagram. Great guys!
Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?
Of course! I will still shoot film for next many, many years. My passion is analogue photography, no matter how many great digital cameras get manufactured in the future. Once there was a guy who said, “A print may have sharp details but it got no life. Analogue is like a painting. It is warm and it has life.” I totally agree with him!
What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences using this camera?
My favourite Lomo camera right now is the Horizon Kompakt. I love wide angle camera. I just can’t stop shooting with it. In fact, I use this more than any of my cameras.
Horizon Kompakt is great for travel photographs. I carry it every time I travel. It allows me to do double exposure and I an crazy for MX photos! It’s been two years since I started using the Horizon Kompakt. I even wrote a review about it.
Please share with us your favorite Lomographic shot and explain why you love that particular image.
This double exposure shot was done out of boredom. I got curious with the possible outcome of combining an illustration and a daily still life photo. What will be the outcome? Will it create surrealism? How should I make my shot a slice of the surreal world?
I never plan any of my double exposure shots. So when this appeared, I felt like I created MAGIC! At my office, graphic designers are called magicians because they can create ‘magic’ with Photoshop. But not me! I manage to create mine without Photoshop! This photo makes me sleepless!!
Please share a Lomograph you wish you had taken and explain why.
It’s not only amazing but it has that dramatic effect in it. Through the limited shade of colors, the subject, and the composition, he created a surreal concept. The swan is swimming in a blueberry crystal lake surrounded by a fiery red nature and yet managed to look calm. I always get amazed with photos taken using a Kodak Aerochrome film. I have yet to try one because I still need to master the technique of shooting infrared!
What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?
I’m not sure. I don’t know that much yet. I just discuss and exchange information with my friends and I don’t treat that as advice. The amazing thing about chatting with lomographers is that we gain a lot of information about film photography from each other and that’s it.
If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, which one is it and why?
There’s this song from Cults called Go Outside.
Its about going outside and playing with your friends. It’s about having fun, enjoying the great weather, and discovering new places. I’m like that. I love going outdoors and observing my surroundings!
Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?
Expect the unexpected and enjoy the excitement of experiments… Lomography Golden Rule 8 and 9! Do some experiments with your shots. Start from the basic. Do a random self-double or do a film swap with someone else and don’t plan, just have fun. You will get addicted to surprises when you see the results!
