is this a kind of a ritual to wave the winter goodby? We've got something like this here called BIIKEBRENNEN. When the whalers left the harbour after a long winter the fires were the last sign they saw from their homes.

@streuobst yes, it is a holiday before Lent, but it is rather a pagan holiday. it's week festival with pancakes, in the end (in sunday) we burn "doll-Winter" but we with friends, and their friends :) make alternative fest. every year make new doll (not traditional) some art object.
